Women are remarkably good at pushing through discomfort. Between work, family, caregiving responsibilities, and the general pace of modern life, it’s easy to put your own health concerns on the back burner. You tell yourself it’s nothing. You wait to see if it goes away. You Google it at midnight and close the tab when the results make you anxious.
Here’s the truth: your body communicates with you for a reason. And when something feels off—even if you can’t quite name it—that’s often your cue to make an appointment.
At Centre OB/GYN in Raleigh, we see patients every day who waited longer than they should have. Not because they didn’t care about their health, but because they weren’t sure whether their symptoms were “serious enough.” We want to change that.
“The doctor explained everything and was thorough. The exam was not painful at all.”

You Don’t Need a Crisis to See Your OB/GYN
One of the most common things we hear from new patients is: “I wasn’t sure if I should come in for this.” The answer is almost always yes—you should.
Your annual wellness visit is a great baseline, but it’s not the only reason to call us. Our gynecology services are available year-round for everything from routine questions to new or worsening symptoms. You don’t have to wait until your next scheduled appointment if something doesn’t feel right.
Symptoms That Warrant a Call to Your OB/GYN
Here are some of the most commonly dismissed—but genuinely important—symptoms that deserve a conversation with your provider:
🔴 Irregular or Missed Periods
Occasional irregularity happens. But if your periods are consistently unpredictable, very heavy, very light, or have stopped altogether, it’s time to investigate. Changes in your cycle can signal thyroid issues, PCOS, perimenopause, pregnancy, or other conditions.
🔴 Pelvic Pain or Pressure
Mild cramping around your period is normal. Persistent or severe pelvic pain—especially outside of your cycle—is not. This can be associated with conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, or pelvic inflammatory disease, all of which are very treatable when caught early.
🔴 Unusual Vaginal Discharge or Odor
Changes in discharge color, consistency, or smell—especially if accompanied by itching or burning—can indicate a yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, or an STI. These are common and nothing to be embarrassed about, but they do need treatment.
🔴 Pain During Sex
Painful intercourse (dyspareunia) is more common than many women realize, and it should never be considered “normal.” It can be a symptom of vaginal dryness (especially in perimenopause), endometriosis, pelvic floor dysfunction, infections, or other conditions.
🔴 Bladder Changes
Frequent urination, leaking urine when you laugh or cough, or a sudden urgent need to go can all be signs of a UTI, pelvic floor issues, or other concerns that are very manageable with the right care.
🔴 Breast Changes
New lumps, skin dimpling, nipple discharge, or changes in breast shape deserve immediate attention. Combined with your recommended annual mammogram, regular self-exams and prompt reporting of changes are your best tools for early breast cancer detection.
🔴 Unexplained Fatigue, Weight Changes, or Mood Shifts
Hormonal imbalances—including thyroid dysfunction, perimenopause, and adrenal issues—can manifest as fatigue, unexplained weight gain or loss, anxiety, or depression. These symptoms are sometimes dismissed as stress or aging, but they’re worth exploring.
